Endometriosis

Endometriosis
Endometriosis is a chronic and often painful condition in which tissue similar to the lining of the uterus (endometrium) grows outside the uterus. This tissue can be found on the ovaries, fallopian tubes, the outer surface of the uterus, and other pelvic organs. During each menstrual cycle, this tissue behaves like the uterine lining—thickening, breaking down, and bleeding—but unlike menstrual blood, it has no way to exit the body, causing inflammation, pain, and scarring.
Symptoms of Endometriosis:
The symptoms of endometriosis can vary from mild to severe and may include:
Painful periods (dysmenorrhea)
Pain during or after intercourse
Chronic pelvic pain
Heavy or irregular menstrual bleeding
Pain during bowel movements or urination
Infertility or difficulty conceiving
Fatigue, bloating, or nausea
It is important to note that the severity of symptoms does not always correlate with the extent of the condition. Some women with mild endometriosis may experience severe symptoms, while others with advanced stages may have few or no symptoms.
Causes and Risk Factors:
The exact cause of endometriosis is unknown, but several theories include retrograde menstruation, hormonal imbalances, immune system disorders, and genetic predisposition. It is more common in women with a family history of the condition and those who have never given birth.
Diagnosis and Treatment:
Dr. Surbhi Bhargava conducts a thorough evaluation which may include a pelvic examination, ultrasound, MRI, and laparoscopy (a minimally invasive procedure that provides a clear view of the pelvic organs).
Treatment options are based on the severity of symptoms and the patient’s reproductive goals and may include:
Medications: Pain relievers, hormonal therapies (such as birth control pills, GnRH agonists, or progestins) to control the growth of endometrial tissue
Laparoscopic surgery: To remove or destroy endometrial growths and adhesions while preserving fertility
Lifestyle guidance: Nutritional advice, exercise, and stress management to help reduce symptoms
